Wellington

Located in the heart of the Kansas Prairie, was named for the Duke Of Wellington. In April 1871 when the eight original settlers selected the present site for the city, they realized the boundary line just north of Indian Territory would draw homesteaders and would serve as a gateway to those yet unsettled lands to the South.
On April 2,1871 the town was surveyed and by April of 1872, Wellington had been named the county seat of Sumner County. By the end of that year, the first public school had been built and Wellington's first newspaper had begun operation. The next few years was the building of business, mills, churches, and the entry of the Santa Fe Railroad in Wellington.
Through the years Wellington has continued to grow. While still a proud agricultural community Wellington has also attracted more than 25 diversified industries which include aircraft, transportation and fabricated metals. The Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce along with the Sumner  County Economic Developement Commission continuues to create a favorable atmosphere for the establishment of new business and industries.
